Spiritual Aspect in Social Work

Abstract

Social work has its roots in social welfare activities particularly charity which is linked with the idea of spirituality. Even though social work has been developed by scientific theories and emerging new professional approaches, spirituality can sometimes be recognized with contemporary social work. Today, spirituality and religion have become a much more broadened topic in social work and helping professionals. For example, the social work code of ethics makes very specific mention of individuals, religious beliefs and practices. This study attempts to look at the harmony among social work and some common religions being Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This paper focuses on religions' values and basic beliefs and their similarities with social work. Also, this paper discusses the impacts of religions' values and beliefs on social work practice. In conclusion, the paper highlights various harmonizations among social work and the five religions. Accordingly, it can be said that social work has a spiritual aspect that could enhance the professional practice.
