Abstract

Numerous frameworks and approaches have been proposed by grammarians and exegesis scholars in the critical study of the style of the Glorious Qur'an. These frameworks have been based greatly on what can be called sentence-level syntax. However, it can be claimed that sentence-level structure was not effective in the exegesis of the Quranic meaning of different expressions. In the light of this argument, this study addresses the issue of employing text-level structure in the study of the Quranic meaning. This is an approach that is concerned with the study of the text as an integrated construct that goes beyond the sentence level where each constituent gives explanations to other text elements, starting from the sentence-level. The hypothesis is that text-level syntax is a more integrated approach that can give a deeper understanding of the Quranic meaning which will ultimately reveal deeper conceptual aspects within the text. The study is based on investigating a number of the verses and expressions of the Qur'an where Quranic exegesis scholars adopted text-level grammar methods in explaining the closest intended meaning within these Quranic expressions.
