Abstract

We believe that King Abdullah Center for the Promotion of Arabic, which was founded in 1429 Hijri, is a highly qualified institution which can fulfill such a role. In its founding statement, the center has set the following major objectives:

• Preserving the vitality of the Arabic language.
• Establishing a favorable environment for the expansion and implementation of Arabic.
• Providing scientific, linguistic and literary terminology including its unification and implementation.

It is within these avowed objectives that the present project is grounded. It is meant to illustrate and activate these goals by transforming them from mere wishes and aspirations into tangible reality. The proposed project is based on theoretical and applied research. We will start by anchoring it in its theoretical precepts and foundations. Then, we will collect, describe and divide the available terminological corpora into their various domains. Next, we will demonstrate the way it can be integrated and transformed into a terminological asset/database. This operation will take into account not only the practicality and usefulness of these terminological items but also their sensitivity to progress and change as well as their correspondence with the latest terminological developments in the targeted domains. We believe that this project will contribute to the terminological vitality of Arabic, its use in communication and its openness to the current information age and the proliferation of terminology.
