Abstract

The importance of this study comes from its relation to both the Sudanese and the Arabic literary studies. The study includes the history of Sudan and the old Arabic poetry and its criticism. It traces the etymology of the word "Sudan" in the old Arabic poetry. The study adopts a mixture between the historical and the descriptive analytical approaches covered in two chapters. One of the most important findings of the paper is that, the word "Sudan" in the history was not restricted to the current country as a matter of fact; it included a wider area of Africa.
