Abstract

This research aims to conduct a semantic structural study of the Arabic particle Kalla in the Holy Quran. There are particles in the Arabic language, such as laa (No), Leyta fif only), halla (why didn't you) and so forth, which are lexical particles. Each one of them has a primary meaning, and other subsidiary meanings that depend on the context and the structure of the text. For example, the particle Kalla is one of the particles which is repeatedly used in the Quran. This study aims to collect, study and analyze all the different meanings of the particle Kalla. It also aims to combine and deal with both the grammatical and semantic structure of this particle. It uses a descriptive analytical approach to show how linguists have taken into account the structure of the Quran when examining linguistic phenomena. Moreover, the research classifies the particle Kalla in actual use, and its semantic meaning in Arabic dictionaries and in grammar books. It also it examines its lexical and structural formis as they occur in the Quran by presenting the views of linguists and exegetists. The study has reached results that show the structural and semantic phenomenon of Kalla, and its primary and secondary meanings, being used with all parts of speech except verbs. The study also shows that Kalla is not a functional particle, as it does not affect the grammatical function of the clause which follows it, having a variety of lexical implications in the Quranic text. Finally, the study recommends to extend the discussion to include all lexical particles in the Quran, combining both the structural and semantic dimensions.
