Abstract

Studying the history of science is one of the studies that contribute in reviving the intellectual and scientific heritage of the Golden Age of Islamic civilization during which it excelled. The eighth AH/fourteenth century AD witnessed great scientific and historical importance because of the flourishing of scientific movement and the existence of elite scholars of the Islamic, Arab, historical, applied medical sciences. This research briefly studies the medical scientific movement in Egypt and Levant throughout the century, besides the doctors’ achievements in teaching, writing, and their contributions in medical science branches. The physician Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Sa’id al-Ansari al-Sinjari, (Ibn al-Akfani) has been taken as a sample for the study. He was one of the most prominent physician in the eighth century AH, and his medical books were the most famous, as well as being more skillful in treating patients and teaching medicine in open lecture meetings, which reflect his scientific encyclopedic knowledge and mastery of sciences. The research briefly studied his most important medical books like (Ghaniyat Al-Labib ind Ghaibat Al-Tabib), (Kashf Al-Raen fi Ahwal Al-ain), (Rawdat Al-Anba’ fi Akhbar Al-Atibaa), and (Nihayat Al-Qasd fi Sina’at Ah-fased). These books that Ibn al-Akfani added to the works of doctors of the era, are among the most important books written on medical sciences at that time. So, after studying the life of Ibn al-Akfani and books, we discovered a great scientist who influenced the scientific movement in the Islamic State.
